Roman Butym is a Ukrainian photographer based in Cracow, Poland. He specializes in documentary and fine art photography. Aside from his commercial work, Roman experiments with various forms of visual storytelling, showing how personal experiences are intertwined with broader social processes. He explores themes of identity, queer and drag culture, and ecology and everyday life. In 2021 he co-created Validity Period (with Pavlo Kyryk, a Ukrainian writer), a book project about consumption and the disposable society.

My artistic practice is based mostly on long-term observation and narrative construction. Working with photography as both document and interpretation, I look for tensions between visibility and concealment, intimacy and performance, and reality and its constructed forms. Some of my ongoing projects include Transformation (drag culture in Poland), and Movement (rhythms of everyday life). the UNSEEN (photographed in Ukraine, Poland and Greece in 2019-2026) is a documentary series about homeless people on the margins of society who remain invisible throughout public celebrations, social protests, and the everyday flows of life. Their existence is a silent commentary on our priorities, and on how selectively we see and support each other. –Roman Butym
