Felipe Garza is a Mexican photographic artist who has lived most of his life in Monterrey, Mexico. He received a Chemical Engineering degree from Stanford University, and an MBA from Cornell University. He traveled extensively during a forty-year career at a Mexican multinational company. His passion for photography began when one of his photographs was published in the 1977 Stanford yearbook. Since then, he has developed a personal style and assiduously studied the art form in photographic workshops. His work has been presented in group exhibitions in the Dominican Republic (ISO-100 Dominicana); in Monterrey (Colectiva Siete); in Mexico City (Cuartoscuro); and in Minneapolis (MPLS photo center).

The Day of the Dead celebrations in Oaxaca are profoundly important because they reflect a deep cultural belief that death is not an end, but a continuation of life’s cycle. Families honor their loved ones through vibrant altars, marigold flowers, traditional foods, and candlelit visits to cemeteries, creating a powerful sense of connection between the living and the dead. In Oaxaca, these traditions are especially rich and communal, blending indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec practices with Catholic influences, making the celebration both spiritual and social. Beyond remembrance, it reinforces identity, preserves heritage across generations, and showcases the region’s artistry and worldview, where grief is transformed into celebration and memory into living tradition. –Felipe Garza
