PETER BROWN LEIGHTON
(Lockhart, TX)
The Pearly Gates Archive
Curated by Michael Mehl
FOTOSEPTIEMBRE 2023 Monograph

The Pearly Gates Archive is a body of work through which I’ve channeled a decade of existential discombobulation into images digitally constructed from scans of discarded twentieth century photographs.

Gabriel García Márquez once optimistically wrote that “Life is the best thing ever invented.” The Pearly Gates Archive circles this claim like water around an open drain, all while begging the question: If what García Márquez suggests is true, why is it that so many humans at the summit of the evolutionary ladder, seem so ill-equipped to keep themselves, much less the rest of us, alive?

Everyone, I suppose, has an opinion. Humanity’s list of shortcomings, after all, is as long as its history. The Pearly Gates Archive is a counterfactual take on the subject, summoning fictional narratives and offering copious evidence of absurdities having been committed –while ultimately reaching no common agreement as to what any of it means. Purposely leaving everyone in the end to consider that, of all of the Earth’s species, ours is the only one wired to both sustain a sense of humor and to, in ever more complex ways, destroy itself completely.

I came of age in the 1960’s in small town Texas, leaving to study history at Trinity University in San Antonio. Later, in the 1970s, I trained and worked with photographer Tom Wright –a National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient– at what was then the Southwest Craft Center, now the UTSA Southwest School of Art.

As a person advancing in years, I have lived the life I wanted though not the life I thought I would. Along the way, photography has been a means of turning this distinction into a language that makes sense to me. On occasion, the images I’ve constructed and the stories they’ve told have made sense to others as well.

MICHELLE WILBY FRIESENHAHN
(San Antonio, TX)
Let Them Eat Cake
Curated by Michael Mehl
FOTOSEPTIEMBRE 2023 Monograph

The artwork in this monograph was created using digital photography and digital painting methods. Most of these images were created while isolating (mostly) during COVID. I would go to wherever I could buy desserts and sweets, or find a friend or neighbor baking. I ate most of the desserts as I finished photographing them. When I gained 25 pounds, I stopped eating… but I found it difficult to photograph and paint a sweet treat without eating it as well. I have since been exploring different subjects and only occasionally indulge in shooting and painting desserts and other sweet treats. I find food, and especially desserts, to have a visceral quality that makes me want to examine and emphasize their color, shapes and textures in artistic terms. And my work is calorie-free.

Michelle Wilby Friesenhahn has been an illustrator and graphic designer for more than thirty years, and the recipient of numerous industry awards. A founding member of Communications Arts of San Antonio and past board member of the American Institute of Graphic Designers, her work in editorial design and illustration have appeared in many publications including Advertising Age, Vegetarian Times, and Harvard Business Review. Wilby Friesenhahn has facilitated a wide range of creative projects for numerous clients in multiple industries, ranging from brand identity, packaging, print, and collateral pieces to digital, web, and trade show exhibits. In 2022 she exhibited a body of more than eighty digital caricature portraits of political figures of the Trump Crime Family and Assorted Fascists in a solo show entitled Ouch that smARTS! to benefit the Bexar County Democrats.

CARLOS LIMAS
(McAllen, TX)
Intangible
FOTOSEPTIEMBRE 2023 Online Gallery

Carlos Limas received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Graphic Design from the Instituto Profesional de Arte y Diseño, Monterrey, México, and a BA in Studio Art from l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Bruxelles, Belgium. He completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), Edinburg, TX. He participated in a conceptual art residency at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, Italy with artists Luciano Fabro and Diego Esposito. Limas is fluent in Spanish, English, and French, and has lived in Mexico, Brussels, and the USA. His primary media are photography, painting, and video. He has exhibited in solo and group art exhibitions at regional, national, and international levels, including México, Belgium, Slovakia, Italy, France, China, Bolivia, and the USA.

He presented his 2021 solo show, Stillness, at the International Museum of Arts & Science, McAllen, TX, and Intangible in 2023 at Rusteberg Gallery, UTRGV, Brownsville, TX. He served as Chair of the School of Art Escuela Adolfo Prieto at CONARTE from 2006 to 2011 in Monterrey, México, creating multiple projects for the artistic community including art workshops, artists’ talks, and a local TV show. Limas teaches digital and analog photography at UTRGV and South Texas College and is the Program Coordinator for the UTRGV Center for Latin American Arts, covering events in México, South America, and the USA.

Intangible (spelled the same in English and Spanish) is a collection of digitally manipulated images of people and places, displaying patterns of lines that extend in different directions, transcending beyond the constraints of the picture frame. Several color palettes are represented, ranging from vivid and saturated colors to more neutral, almost monochromatic tones.

I’ve been driving through the Rio Grande Valley’s back roads since I returned from Monterrey, México, in 2013, without knowing what I was looking for. Years passed, and I soon discovered that the more you look, the less you find. I was trying too hard, so I needed to take a step back and simply contemplate what was in front of me. At that point, I began paying more and more attention to the invisible landscape; abandoned homes and old structures on the side of the road started to emerge. This single revelation made a very strong connection to my past and present. I understood how complex the paradox of time can be.

The Future and the Past are Intangible; one is not here yet, and the other is forever gone, a constant and perpetual transition. We only exist in the Here and the Now, and we’re continually slipping away through time, extending toward infinity or oblivion. The only actual evidence that we were ever here is a single photograph, and even that will soon fade away.

Photography is not merely about capturing images; it is a form of visual storytelling that has the power to convey human emotion, experience, and individual perspective. It affords us an opportunity to visit other times, places, and ways of life through someone else’s eyes. By combining the experiences and visual representations of twelve San Antonio photographers, Unseen not only honors the rich tapestry of the San Antonio community but also contributes to a more inclusive and authentic representation of the city’s identity.

Unseen is presented in a unique immersive environment created by Digital Pro Lab to highlight and enhance the stories and the storytelling of our community. The opening reception event includes outdoor food and entertainment.

For the past thirty years, Digital Pro Lab has provided printing, archiving, and photo restoration services to the greater San Antonio area. Now, one of the last photo labs in town, it has become a pass-through for the city’s memories, histories, and perspectives. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation for San Antonio that Digital Pro Lab will showcase unseen artists who are capturing the city’s lesser-known stories.

Anthony Garcia is a San Antonio-based photographer fascinated with Chiaroscuro’s interplay between light and darkness. By playing with the balance of light and shadow, he seeks to capture that which dwells beneath the surface. Through collaboration and direction, he coaxes out what is not always visible to the naked eye, in what he can only refer to as a “Rock and Roll” aesthetic with dark tonalities, such as portraying women in power poses instead of a diminutive demeanor. He delves deeply into his subject’s personalities and pulls them out of their comfort zones, taking them and the viewer on a personal reflection journey, and telling a story that takes them to another place.

Joan Frederick lives in San Antonio, Texas and is an artist, writer, photographer and Indian art historian. She grew up in Oklahoma where the largest number of Indian tribes were relocated at the end of the 19th century, but she moved to San Antonio during the oil crash of the 1980s. The diverse Mexican heritage she found in south Texas closely mirrored the Indian culture she had left in Oklahoma, and as she says, “Our southern brothers took me in.” She won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1995, and her biography of contemporary Kiowa painter T.C. Cannon stands as one of the most important books in the history of Native American art, because Cannon is widely considered to be the Van Gogh of Indian art who helped change the face of Native American art into the “new wave” scene which characterizes the genre today. Frederick’s latest work focuses on preserving information about the culture and art of Native Americans and also on her photography which profiles the two cultures, both Native American and Latino, in which she now resides.

Equilibrium is an ongoing dialogue between photography and contact improvisation dance, a dance practice that utilizes shared weight, counterbalance, and intuitive movement in relation to another body and to the environment. The camera is both spectator and collaborator: observing intervals of fluidity and stasis in the dance, and encapsulating moments of clarity, rhythm and obscurity through still and time-lapsed exposures.

Rebecca Dietz (Photographer, Professor of Art, San Antonio College) is a photograph-based artist whose work utilizes photographic constructs of light and time to induce ambiguity and influence sensory perception of altered states. In this “unknowing” of the known world, the photographs capture dreaming and waking states that flicker between real and surreal.

Jordan Fuchs (Professor of Dance, Texas Woman’s University. Director, Jordan Fuchs Company) is a choreographer, performer and teacher whose choreography is grounded in improvisational practice, specifically the bias towards disorientation, sensation, a movement form he has been practicing for more than 30 years.

Melissa Sanderson (Associate Professor of Dance, Austin Community College) is a dance artist whose work spans choreography, performance, dance film, and education. She has danced with the Jordan Fuchs company since 2015.

From SA to SA: From South America to San Antonio encapsulates the astonishing power of documentary photography as a direct representation of our realities and as a force of social change. This exhibition of Pan-American documentary photography presents over 180 remarkable works from 20 award-winning Latin American and Latinx photographers living in South, Central and North America.

Focusing on the weaving of individual and collective threads, From SA to SA depicts visually appealing and thought-provoking photographic narratives. As an art form and as a journalistic medium, documentary photography captures a straightforward glance and accurate portrait of society with the artistic touch from the photographers’ lenses. Throughout Latin America and the Latinx community in the U.S., documentary photographers chronicle historical and relevant events, intimate portraiture, and everyday life while capturing the socioeconomic and cultural struggles faced by minorities and marginalized populations.

The subjects, places, and situations portrayed on these prints are vivid, present, and emerge from social challenges revealing a series of thematic paradigms that range from immigrant stories and the effects of the COVID pandemic, to the fight for women’s rights, social unrest, and indigenous realities. Expanding throughout the Americas and representing more than 15 regions, From SA to SA brings seldom told stories from the Latinx experience through poignant, poetic, and everlasting photographic imagery.

From SA to SA invites us to embark on a visually aesthetic journey documented by these twenty photographers who, on several occasions, have risked their lives to capture historically significant moments. It is through the uniqueness of their photographic lenses, their social resistance and their Latinx perspective that we can, today, experience these valuable images, remember our past, and present them as a series of interwoven narratives reflecting the Pan-American reality. -Guillermina Zabala

Born in Argentina, Guillermina Zabala is an award-winning filmmaker and artist, educator, and curator whose art examines the intersection between the individual and their environment. Her works have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and film festivals nationally and internationally, including the McNay Art Museum, SAMA, Contemporary, Telluride Film Festival, and Showtime Latino Showcase.

I’ve always been interested in maps and cities, and through archaeology have researched and published about material culture and urban settlement patterns, in relation to the natural environment. On several recent roundtrips by air from San Antonio, Texas, to Guadalajara and Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico (usually with a stopover in Mexico City), to participate in the 360 Xochi Quetzal Artists/Writers Residency Program in Chapala, I pre-booked a window seat so I could take quick shots of the urban layout of the cities below as we depart and land. I’ve noticed the massive population density and patterns top down from the air for all three cities, including the patterns of roadways, industrial buildings, new development, large areas of concrete commercial warehouses, and highly populated, dense neighborhoods and barrios that look like a solid mass of square blocks of buildings stacked together. In this series I used my original digital photographs, and digitally enhanced them into abstractions, playing with different colors and designs to contrast the built environment with the natural environment. Several photos depict life and settlement literally on the edge of canyons and/or mountain tops, or as in Texas, horizontally connecting towns.

Maureen ‘Momo’ Brown is a visual artist, archaeologist, photographer, museum professional, and a native 5th generation from San Antonio, TX. She earned a BA and MA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in Anthropology/Archaeology. Her work and research focused mainly on 19th century urban downtown San Antonio as well as British, French and Spanish colonial settlements in South Texas and Jamaica; working with several universities and the Texas Historical Commission. Momo was founding director of the Museum of the Coastal Bend, at Victoria College in Victoria, TX, the site director of Casa Navarro State Historic Site, in downtown San Antonio, and program director for the new national Polish Heritage Center in Panna Maria, TX. As an archaeologist she was the site and artifact photographer on many projects and has been featured in numerous publications. She has curated Fotoseptiembre exhibitions in past years, and has won juried awards for her photography. Together Momo, and her husband, Pompa, create large light sculpture installations for public and private events. These include many Fiesta festivals, and the annual Dia de los Muertos Festival, where for ten years now, their sculptures have been featured throughout Hemisfair Park in downtown San Antonio. Their art is on display around the world and in their gallery space in Kinected Co-Working Offices, where this exhibition is being presented.

The seven artists in this exhibition explore their personal connection with nature and/or the built environment –their surroundings through the lens of a moment in time and space. Our connections are threads, the networks that bind us to this earth, and each other since the beginnings. Several artists focus on San Antonio’s built environment, and several in the group, journeyed across the border to re-connect, and include images of the beauty and traditions of Mexico.

Hank Arriazola, travels the world as a motorcycle guide and photography journalist. Here he captured the colors and cultural traditions of Mexico, including, Dia de los Muertos, while exploring Chiapas, Guanajuato, and Oaxaca.

Maureen ‘Momo’ Brown, artist, archaeologist, and museum professional, was immersed in the vibrant colors of everyday life, material pop culture, and natural beauty, on the streets, in the mercados, and along the Malecon of beautiful Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, as part of her 360 Xochi Quetzal Artist/Writers Residency Program, that she attended this summer.

Chel Delaney, an award winning San Antonio-based photographer, is fascinated by the geometric forms and intricate patterns found in the man-made environment, which often connect us to society and nature.

James Gonzales, is a street photographer based in San Antonio, with a special interest in downtown San Antonio. His creative works capture every day and night life on the streets as well as the changing built environment.

Patricia Ortiz, a San Antonio based professional visual artist, has a passion for street photography, local culture and historical architecture, which she captured in her “Ashby Street” series.

Charles Harrison Pompa, a San Antonio and Mexico-based multi-media artist, includes recent images that highlight his journey back home, re-connecting with the “El Occidente” Mexican traditions, places, and people of his past in the present moment in Aguascalientes and surrounding communities where many generations of his family descended, and where he spent most of his early life and art education.

Desiree Schanding, is a local art educator and professional art photographer from South Texas. Her images are reflections of time connecting with nature and the details from nature walks. In this exhibition she layered the photographs on a wood panel with encaustic that acts as a soft barrier, and adds, “one that I’m always trying to break through”.

As a philosophical and theological construct, the idea of “natural order” has been around for centuries, shifting with each epoch’s understanding of nature, order, and our relationship to the cosmos. Used alternately as a means to find comfort, reason, or justification for our actions and place in the universe, humanity’s notions of what is “natural” or “orderly” has as many permutations as nature itself.

Natural Order features three photographers who capture, conjure, or construct a sense of order and meaning from the natural world, reflecting on the wonder and mysteries we discover or bring to the experience. Rob Michaelson turns his camera skyward, observing the grandeur of astronomical phenomena in the night sky, the migration and flight of birds, and the nature of water in his stunning images. Kyle Petersen’s Tiny & Wild series presents an intimate, personal engagement with the small-scale creatures in our midst. The contained, close-up compositions and dramatic, moody lighting create a highly formalized context to consider the hidden ecosystems and characters just outside our back doors. In her richly inventive Still Life series, Barbra Riley elides the style and substance of 17th century Dutch painting with modern technology and contemporary habits and mores. Integrating the luxury, rich color, staged compositions and hidden symbolism of the historical tradition with elements of modernity, Riley calls into question our perceptions of nature, artifice, life, death, morality, and history itself.

Sacred Spaces is an informal, experimental mini solo exhibition exploring the landscapes of isolation through photography. Inspired by the mysticism, minimalism, and colors of the desert as well as black and white Dadaist photography practices. Sacred Spaces is an exhibition that seeks to both literally and figuratively map out the journey of growth and healing that can occur in times of isolation and delve deeper into how we imbue our daily mundane lives with meaning through personal rituals. Guests are asked to bring a small offering for a miniature community altar that will be created for the exhibition.

Crisa Valadez is an artist, writer, and curator based in San Antonio, TX. She currently works for the City of San Antonio Arts & Culture Department and is extremely passionate about art and nonprofit work, having worked and volunteered with several local organizations such as the Texas Public Radio, the McNay Art Museum, Centro San Antonio, Gemini Ink, and more from a young age. She is best known for her curatorial work as the co-founder and former co-director of MOTHERLING, a women-run DIY gallery collective dedicated to highlighting underrepresented and up-and-coming artists. She previously attended Pratt Institute for Creative Writing and is currently a student at Our Lady of the Lake University, completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Art & New Media. Sacred Spaces was an exhibition originally conceived for her 2021 Senior Exhibition Seminar.

New Braunfels Photographic Society’s 2023 Fall Exhibition – A Participatory Photography Exhibition is a collaborative exhibition hosted by the New Braunfels Photographic Society and the Greater New Braunfels Art Council. With the transformation of the Center for the Arts into an art gallery, the New Braunfels Photographic Society will showcase some of the Society’s best photographic works of art from seven regional and local artists curated using the Supported Interpretation (SI) model for visitor-centered exhibitions.

When a photograph captures our attention, the artist generally has deliberately used certain elements to evoke an emotion and lead the viewer’s eye to the picture. For example, there could be a compelling subject. The photograph could tell a story, and the photographer could have dynamically used color, or the overall composition could create a mood or feeling. When browsing through the photographs in this exhibit, visitors are encouraged to explore why photographs move them, and the role impact and technique play in their response to what they are viewing.

I am an explorer who documents the beauty of different cultures around the world, and fascinated by the diversity of human experience. I believe that photography is a powerful tool for documenting and celebrating this diversity.

My photographs are not just about capturing the visual beauty of different cultures. They are also about capturing the essence of these cultures, the values and beliefs that shape them. I want my photographs to transport viewers to other worlds, to give them a glimpse of the richness and complexity of human cultures.

I believe that through my photography I can promote better understanding and appreciation of other cultures. By sharing my images with others, I hope to help people see the world from a different perspective and to learn more about the people who live in it. I also hope to inspire others to travel and to experience the beauty of different cultures firsthand.

My work is often described as being lyrical and evocative. I approach my subjects like a classical painter on composition and color. I am not just a spectator capturing moments from afar, I am unseen, but very much present and having a conversation with my subjects. I am committed to creating work that is both visually appealing and thought-provoking.

Liz Potter is an artist and photographer living in Alpine, Texas.

The Harmony Of Emulsion is a collection of Polaroid emulsion, cyanotype emulsion, and silver gelatin emulsion that all fit into a grand expression of my love for the Chihuahuan Desert. As I created each body of work, I started to see their connectedness despite the visual differences in format. A common thread links them all, and I wanted to show this harmony as a tour of sorts. This exhibit takes you from one thing to another, where the work’s relationships illustrate an over-arching theme while visually depicting the creative process played out in their final forms.

Ramin Samandari was selected as the 2023 Artist of the Year by the San Antonio Art League And Museum.

I was born in Iran. I arrived in Odessa, Texas in 1978 at age 17, sent there by my parents in the midst of the Iranian revolution. At the time I thought I might return to my homeland in a few years with a medical degree, but then the Iran-Iraq War broke out, so I renewed my U.S. visa, eventually got a green card, and in 1990 became a U.S. citizen. A resident of San Antonio since 1988, I decided in the early ’90s to pursue my life long passion of photography. Throughout the ’90s, I exhibited mostly in non traditional venues in San Antonio and Austin. Between 2000 and 2001, I had several solo exhibitions at the University of Incarnate Word’s Center for Spirituality, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, Carver Cultural Art Center and the San Antonio Museum of Art. My work has been exhibited at The Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, UTSA gallery, Southwest School of Art, Artpace, City of San Antonio Department of Culture and Creative Development and many private galleries. My work is in the permanent collection at San Antonio Museum of Art, University of Texas at San Antonio, The Tobin Center for the Performing Art and Institute of Texan Cultures.
