This exhibit is based on the book
Texas Zydeco by author Roger Wood,
and photographer James Fraher,
which resulted from years traveling
the zydeco corridor between Louisiana and Texas.

While interviewing and photographing hundreds
of authentic musicians, dancers, club owners
and fans, they discovered that zydeco,
both historically and currently, belongs
not to a state, but to all the people
of the upper Gulf Coast.

The iconic images of the American frontier
emerged from South Texas, and thanks to
the development of photography, the true
depiction of the frontier is not surrendered
to the mythic images of Hollywood sets.
This exhibition features historic photographs
from the Witte Museum collection, offering
authentic glimpses of South Texans
in their daily life and work.
