MONIQUE GARZA-SULLIVAN (San Antonio, Texas)
PhotoAlchemy – Sunken B-Sides
FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2020 Online Gallery
The Polaroid series Sunken B-Sides began as an experimental technique of film souping. My analog B-Sides created a chemical reaction within those iconic borders. Applying elements with the magic of nature, literary references and prolonged time emitted a photographic alchemy recipe of manipulation. The process yielded results that are abstract expressions which soon became a premonition of the future. The deterioration of our ways of life, social unrest and political injustices unfolding while my instant film technique decayed in lockdown period. Beginning a “Quarantine” era of my work, I am searching for sunken treasure in a sea of uncertainty. Panning for rare gold among this new frontier in the time of Corona. I believe that behind every dark cloud is a silver lining of beauty. In this new wisdom, freedom and truth work together to establish results of transformation.
Monique Sullivan earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her work is inspired by her dreams, spirituality and Latina heritage. Her range of artworks includes photography, painting, ceramics, printmaking, installation and video. Her artistic influences are works from artists like Andy Warhol, David LaChapelle, Frida Kahlo, Annie Leibovitz, Mark Romanek, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. She is a member of the San Antonio Art League and the Greater San Antonio Camera Club. Her exhibition of shows include awards for photography, video and mixed media. She lives in San Antonio with her husband and two children.

KYLE PETERSEN (San Antonio, Texas)
Tiny & Wild
FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2020 Online Gallery
“The pandemic and quarantine have obviously created many challenges for all of us. However, it has also afforded us the rare opportunity to slow down and take a closer look at our surroundings. With drastically more time on my hands at home, I have taken to photographing the wonderful small world in my backyard. Photographing bugs, lizards, and other miniature wildlife has brought me great joy and calm during this tumultuous time. Looking through the lens at these life forms and their ecosystems has served as a reminder of how fragile, beautiful, complex, and resilient our natural world can be.”
Kyle Petersen is an artist and educator based in San Antonio, Texas. He lives with his wife, two kids, one dog (Riley Elvis), and three fish (Van Gogh, Pinkalicious, and Peter). His photographic interests range from roadside trash to the tiny human creatures that occupy his household. He received his B.A. in Studio Art from Bradley University in 2006, and his M.F.A. in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008. Since then, he has taught photography and digital media at Southern Utah University, The Art Institute of Atlanta, Gwinnett Technical College and Black Hawk College. He is currently the Upper School Photography Teacher at Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio.

New Braunfels Photographic Society’s 2020 Fall Exhibition hosted on the New Braunfels Photographic Society Facebook Page. When a photograph captures our attention, the artist generally has deliberately used certain elements to evoke an emotion and lead the viewer’s eye into the picture. For example, there could be a compelling subject, the photograph could tell a story, the photographer could have used color in a dynamic way, or the overall composition could create a mood or feeling. When browsing through the photographs in this exhibit, visitors are encouraged to explore why photographs move them and the role impact and technique play in their response to what they are viewing.

The Trouble With Dave – New York Photos. New York is like no other city because of its size and multitudes of everything—businesses, fads, buildings, cultures—that make it a visual stew. Austin-based Ed Malcik is an urban photographer who has been working in New York off-and-on for 10 years, wandering the streets of five boroughs to find odd and curious images of people and the city. The exhibition’s title, The Trouble With Dave – New York Photos, is half of a graffiti slogan which reads in full, “The Trouble with Dave is That He is My Boyfriend.” The slogan sets the appropriate tone for the exhibition. Ed –a former photojournalist and diplomat, now art photographer with emphasis on urban photography– has exhibited at Mockingbird Handprints in the Blue Star Arts Complex since 2012. His last two exhibitions during Fotoseptiembre were Selling The Alamo in 2018, and The Cat In His Underwear in 2019.

In conjunction with this exhibition, SOLI Chamber Ensemble will include a musical composition by Michael Matthews on their Fall 2020 concert. Date and format (live or virtual) TBD. Please check www.mbaw.org or www.solichamberensemble.org for updates.
Berlin-based artists Michael Kruscha and Michael Matthews come from different backgrounds, work in different media, and have very different artistic experiences and perspectives. Yet they have forged a deep personal and artistic friendship, evidenced by their shared interest in the malleability of photographic expression. Primarily an abstract painter, Michael Kruscha is also an avid photographer and world traveler. The images in his Time Stands Still series were taken over a period of 12 years, often in remote places in which the notion of public transportation seems almost ironic, and the quirky designs of these structures (ranging from highly ornate to minimally functional) calls into question the basic notion of “shelter.” Of them he says: One of my favorite quotes is by the photographer Arno Fischer: “When I take a photo of a man at a bus stop, there should be more to see in the picture than a man waiting for a bus.” To that I can add: whenever I take a photo of a bus stop where no one is waiting, and no bus comes, there’s more to see in the picture than a bus stop without a bus and without people. That, at least, is what I’m aiming for. Isn’t it often the case that we spend more time thinking about what’s missing than about what’s there?
Where Kruscha’s images of un-peopled bus stops in remote, foreign locations evoke an almost abstract quality in their physical and visual isolation, the Canadian composer Michael Matthews creates fully abstract, microcosmic images based on found textures and colors. In the series titled Partituren (the German term for musical parts or scores) Matthews finds kinship in the concept and nature of the musical score to the ideas and images in his visual art. Musical scores function as both graphic and symbolic representations of musical ideas. For Matthews, both art forms are inextricably linked, and his photographic compositions emerge, like his musical ones, from the development of lines, shapes, densities and colors. Taken together, the notions of close up and far away, static and dynamic, bold and subdued, representation and abstraction, are all on display for the viewer to tease out the intricate visual and metaphorical correspondences.

Curious Cuttings And Rebellious Rhizomes – Two artists turn to the natural world to find solace and resilience, employing lens-based interpretations and solar printing methods of their flora familiars. In a time when many are tuned constantly to the current trials of the modern world, Garza and Lynch rebel gloriously by focusing on the undeterred plant life nurturing us even as we struggle within our own species.
Please note: A reception on the date listed above will occur if allowable and safe to host, with potential for an outdoor event to allow safer distancing. If gathering is not advisable, we are considering the potential for a virtual reception via Zoom or Facebook Live on the same date and time. Additionally, The Comfort Art Festival will take place throughout the Comfort business district on Saturday, September 19, 10 am – 4 pm. Carra and Tracy will be our featured artists for that event, and this exhibit will be featured in the art festival guide. Artists may or may not be present during the festival to speak with visitors about their work. Plans for that event may also change, of course, pending the COVID situation.
