Thank you all for joining us again. 2015 was another unique year for Fotoseptiembre.

There seems to be a significant generational shift in the works. This is reflected in the number of younger artists, curators and organizers, in the youth and increasing diversity of people attending openings, and in the relentless use of online opportunities and social media to promote exhibitions and events. We are also seeing how media platforms have doubled-down on their web presence, keeping up with technology and with demographic changes in staff and readership.

We are fortunate, as we have said many times, to enjoy a groundswell of support from our community, which makes of Fotoseptiembre an organic, dynamic, relevant festival. We get a charge from the energy and eagerness of participating artists, curators, venues, and exhibition organizers. It’s interesting to see the different audiences at each venue’s exhibition openings. We like that photographic art is purchased at commercial galleries. We are impressed by the level of professionalism of many participants. And we see a marked increase in the interest and pursuit of the photographic arts among students at the various colleges and universities that host some of our exhibits.

We have a huge appreciation for the enthusiasms of our local media mavens at the San Antonio Current, San Antonio Express News, The Rivard Report, Destinations San Antonio, KLRN TV, Texas Public Radio, do210.com, Artmosphere, San Antonio Woman, The Ranger, and many others who take it upon themselves to offer ample Fotoseptiembre support every year. We cannot thank you enough for all that you do for us.

We frequently hear from visiting artists how unexpected it is for them to see the level of community support for, and engagement with, Fotoseptiembre. This does not happen elsewhere, they say. We already know this, of course. But you can’t convey the breadth and depth of the Fotoseptiembre dynamic unless you get to see it firsthand, as we do. It’s a great feeling, and it’s what keeps us going.

Best of all, we make many new friends every year.
