In the beginning it was PHOTOSíntesis. When Patricia Mendoza founded and became director of Centro de la Imagen in 1994, she called me and asked if I’d be interested in following up with some of the discussions we had had a decade earlier in Mexico City, about creating a photography festival that would be open to all. She told me about her plans for Fotoseptiembre and suggested that I organize the international component of the festival in San Antonio. I said I would. Since I had just joined the Texas Photographic Society as a board member, I proposed to the Society’s President D. Clarke Evans that we host a joint international photography conference, exhibit, and other events in San Antonio, with Patricia Mendoza, Director of Centro de la Imagen, as our featured guest. PHOTOSíntesis 1995 was the seminal Fotoseptiembre event in San Antonio. Included below are some of the promotional materials and photographs of PHOTOSíntesis 1995.
The two San Antonio exhibitions featured further below, were efforts I organized as preludes to the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA SAFOTO Festival. The Septima Bienal certificate is from the first exhibition exchange between San Antonio and Mexico City.
